Somewhat of a misnomer, as this theme clearly resembles the New York Times (the New Yorker is a separate magazine), but in any case, this theme gets a resounding thumbs up.

Not for the fact that it’s so similar looking to the NYT, but because of it’s heavy widgetization. Check out their widget map (on the live demo page), and you can see that pretty much the entire thing can be controlled via the theme admin, which is great for people who want some degree of customization but don’t actually want to touch any code.

Now, there probably aren’t that many people who want their site to look exactly like some version of the NYT, but I would imagine it’s easy enough to make a few changes but still use this for a very content heavy site.

A unique looking magazine/news-style theme with many of the features that any robust WP theme hunter is looking for, including a well-thought out header (categories, pages, RSS and sign in box — would have liked to see newsletter on here) and category-based navigation. What I really like about this theme is that a lot of the little things have been thought of, too.

For instance, the pre-included Google Adsense — but it’s not just thrown up there in annoying places, but in probably quite effective ones (see the HP, and the supernav). Also, on the post pages, the creator added a related/popular/featured posts box — how very nice.

Not a huge fan of the secondary category or tag pages because the featured post seems a bit too large, but they definitely have a personality.

A place for everything and everything in its place. This Wordpress theme does a nice job of bridging the gap between a blog and a full-blown magazine-style site. The look has a lot of personality, some might say on the crafty/feminine side, which could either be a great thing or a bad thing depending on if you want to use it out of the box. The theme comes with options so don’t get discouraged if paper isn’t your thing. Options include: “default, newspaper, red print, wood and floral prints.”

Preserves a few very bloggy themes like the posts by calendar (see the right sidebar) and the tag cloud.

Other nice touches: prominent call out RSS feeds by post, comments and email (feedburner)

An elegant and appropriately named magazine-style theme (that also comes with an alternate more bloggy template) from the folks over at WooThemes. Category-style navigation is nice, but the top menu (with image gallery etc) is implemented cleanly.

Downsides: a little too much white-space for my liking.
Upsides: image & video gallery. More image-oriented instead of text-heavy (for instance, category landing pages are not your boring list of headlines & teases, but an image-driven page.)

Really nice sense of balance with this magazine/news-style theme. It manages to get a lot of content onto the homepage, but without seemed too cluttered.

Categories get drop down top nav treatment. Other nice features include a tabbed main feature on the HP and video integration.

The latest release comes with three color schemes – brown, red or green.

The latest flavor of the Revolution series from Brian Gardner, this theme is a good solution for an out-of-the-box city-style portal.

Page-based-navigation as well as a secondary tier of category-based-navigation make this a solid CMS-style theme. Like the other Revolution themes, nice features include prominent site search and RSS/newsletter subscription call out. Also like all Revolution themes, it comes with a companion forum theme, which is definitely a nice touch.

Assuming you don’t want to modify anything, the theme comes with a light blue color scheme or a light grey color scheme.

The Revolution Series does what any theme claiming to be a magazine-style theme should do, and then some. Revolution Pro Media adds more multimedia to the mix than some of the other Revolution variations, such as Revolution Magazine or Revolution News. Flickr images and video is integrated prominently. A unique feature of this theme is the tagged/tags section of the main well, which for those of you who hate auto-scrollers/sliders, is a neat way to present a lot of information.

By the same maker as minimalist Visualization and the Gridline series, Monochrome is a visually arresting theme that places a lot of emphasis on images. So if your photos are not as great as the ones featured on the site, then you may way to think again. Monochrome has a lot of solid magazine-style features, like category-based-navigation (with dropdown subcategories), as well as category representation under the main feature and above the big footer. I’ll repeat a bit of what I wrote in the Revolution News page — standard mag-style features include two-tiered top-nav: page-based for the first tier and category-based for the 2nd tier (with subcategory drop downs). Touches which distinguish this theme from others include nice balance on the HP and focus on images. Another nice thing with the Revolution series is that there are phpBB3 forum templates included. One nitpick: I would like to see some “most popular” type features.

This minimalist theme takes a pyramid approach to content display — one feature story/large image, beneath that three smaller features (with smaller images), then as the base, five thumbnail features bolstered by a big footer. The main nav menu is a bit different than many themes in that it incorporates both pages and categories (sub pages and categories in drop down). An upper nav repeats the categories. Overall a nice theme, but the white space beneath the main story seems underutilized. If you like this theme, you may also want to check out Gridline, a theme by the same maker, Graph Paper Press.
