Say you’re looking for a theme for your obscure literary publication. Or perhaps it’s a poetry site. Or something else very artsy. Voila: Press! This Wordpress theme is the one for you. The homepage showcases a lot of content while still remaining very clean and visually appealing.

Category-level pages put the focus on photos, so make sure that is important to you. One minor complaint: the styling of the comment area is a big bold for my taste, but other than that, lovely.

Platformate has a clean and well-organized look, all while showcasing a lot of content. A news or magazine would probably find good use in this theme. Posts by category are featured in the right sidebar, while conversation is encouraged and prominent with recent comments, posts and tags are featured in the left sidebar.

Although Wellblog is touted as a Wordpress theme for a recipe or food friendly website, we could see it also being good for anyone looking for a slightly different take on the standard blog format. Would be nice to see category-based navigation integrated into the sidebar. The theme comes with three skins, one yellow, one black and one grey.

TypeMagz is a visually stunning theme with well suited for an edgy publication, like a music website or something artsy. Though I have to say that a lot of real estate is sacrificed in the name of being design-y. The homepage features a prominent image behind the header (the image can be refreshed), with links to articles nicely highlighted below. Fans of hierarchy beware: there are no hierarchical navigation points, so to speak. Article-level pages feature sidebars that include related, popular posts and search in the sidebar.

The homepage also does a nice job of highlighting a main article, with a slider to the right highlighting additional articles.

Arthemia Premium squeezes a lot of content into it’s clean and minimalistic lines, and is probably best suited for those looking to build a content-heavy website, such as a news or magazine site.

Cross-pollination is the name of the game, with article categories highlighted in a sort of a middle navigation bar (pages and sub-pages make up the top navigation), ‘random posts’ in the bottom (by photo) — a nice feature, and one article from each category highlighted in each article level page. Nice!

The homepage also does a nice job of highlighting a main article, with a slider to the right highlighting additional articles.

This is a great example of a clean, minimalist Wordpress news-theme with a nice emphasis on images. Could see this being used for a recipe or food site.

Homepage uses  a slick featured content well, and stays uncluttered by employing two top menus – the supernav for the less-accessed things like “About Us”, etc, and primary navigation is reserved for categories (and subcategories) of content. The homepage has a prominent place for the once very common popular box, which showcases the most popular etc. posts: “Popular”, “Latest”, “Comments”, “Tags”.

Category landing pages have a nice presentation – similar to the homepage, they’re not just a bunch of text links slapped together. The subcategory landing pages are a bit more typical.

Overall, a nice theme, but a little bit too much white space for my taste.

This theme has a nice approach to video, incorporating it in an ajax tab on the HP as well as, at least in the way the demo is set up, as a category.

Comes equipped with a lot of visual variety on the HP, showcasing a ton of content through the main well, and two other content columns. The individual post pages are a bit on the plain side.

If you like this theme, you might also be interested in the Revolution series, which also contains page and category-based navigation, prominent RSS/email and search.

This straightforward theme is probably a good choice for someone who doesn’t know how to do tons of customization. One of the most common questions when implementing a theme is inevitably “How do I change the logo/header”? This developer has thought of that. Advertising in also integrated, as is the popular most commented and most commented functionality.

Would love to see a larger search, email, RSS box, as well as category-based drop down navigation.

Michael Oeser aka DER PRiNZ, whose theme Branford Magazine was, as far as I could tell, one of the earliest and most popular free magazine-style Wordpress themes, is back with another free theme, this time called Wynton Magazine.

I’m digging the addition of the category-navigation sub bar, as well as the built-in advertising. The homepage very elegantly highlights the lead story, with three supporting stories. The bottom is similar to the robust footer concept where two rows of third-tier stories reside. All in all, a nice job, though I would have liked to see a bigger call out to RSS/subscribe/newsletters and a slightly bigger search box.

Nicely styled theme with a few neat features, like auto image resizing, and a homepage that manages to get a lot in, but keep it organized looking. Both page and category-based-navigation (drop down menu bar and the middle menu bar), as well as a robust footer.
